Did you refund them part of their security deposit when the left in 2009. That's what we cover in the pdf supplement. How to partially refund a security deposit, and use the balance to pay for fees, rent, etc.
If they lived there in 2009, and they paid their last rent in 2009, that money is probably already posted in an invoice against your Rent item. So if you want to use that money to pay utilities instead -- then they will still have to pay for their rent in 2009. Or, do you want to give them a credit, and write off the cleaning and utilities? I don't see how you can have 1 payment apply to rent, and something else.
